LIME MORTAR SERVICES-BRISTOL

cantax house

My name is James and I have many years of experience working on historic building conservation in the South West of England, particularly Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North Somerset. I love what I do and I have long had a passion for preserving and restoring historic buildings in the way that they are supposed to be restored! Using only traditional materials and techniques.

I grew up in Bath, where I gained experience working on iconic sites such as National Trust: Tyntesfield, Dyrham Park, Killerton (Exeter) and other sites: Royal Cresent Hotel in Bath, Lacock and Ashton Court Gatehouse in Bristol. We carried out various restorations and renovations to these sites using historical methods and techniques.

One particular claim to fame is that I was involved in working on the 18th Century, grade 2 listed Cantax house in Lacock. This house is featured on the 6th movie of the Harry Potter series, The Half Blood Prince. We worked on many of the houses in this vicinity following flood damage to the interior of the properties.

Following my move to Bristol I began working for a Lime specialist covering predominantly South Gloucestershire. Here I learnt in-depth knowledge of Lime mortars, such as identifying and matching the original mortars composition and performance, selecting the correct lime and aggregates suitable for the substrate and the appropriate methods of application.

Our work here included Lime haired plastering & rendering, Lime pointing, stone walling and limecrete flooring. We worked at the Winterbourne Medieval barn and other historic residential properties in and around South Gloucestershire and Bristol. During my time working for this company I was involved in training architectural students in the history and application of lime alongside other specialists.

We are experienced in the specialist production and use of hot lime mortar mixes which have been shown to give superior permeability and flexibility when compared with other lime mortar mixes. We mix our own lime mortars on site and predominantly use air lime/quick lime mortars with additions such as pozzolans in order to replicate a traditional mix as much as possible. This method of producing lime mortar has stood the test of time and can be traced back to use during the times of the Roman Empire and the Ancient Egyptians.

I am always happy to discuss any potential projects you may have and offer advise where possible. I am fully insured and can provide references from previous customers on request. I also have experience providing written method statements for listed building consent if required. We cover Bristol and South Gloucestershire predominantly, but would be willing to travel further afield if the need arose.

We are corporate members of The Building Limes Forum (An organization that; “encourages expertise and understanding in the appropriate use of building limes and education in the standards of production, preparation, application and after care”) Building Limes Forum, 2023.

Why Use Lime?
The Benefits of Lime Mortar

Lime mortars and plasters are highly recommended for older buildings over modern cement and gypsum alternatives because of their vapour permeability. This essential feature allows buildings to “breathe,” effectively reducing the risk of water ingress. By allowing moisture to escape rather than trapping it within the masonry, lime mortar minimises the potential for damage to the building’s fabric. This makes lime mortar an excellent choice for maintaining the structural integrity and longevity of historic structures.

TESTIMONIALS

Charlie-Bristol
Lime plastering

James has done an excellent job with lime plastering inside our property, in addition to several other varied jobs (replacing garden gates, fixing some gaps and cracks in external render, updating a house alarm/security system).

Communication has been fabulous, as has been the quality of all work, and James is a pleasant and professional person to have around.

Highly recommended and, as with the previous reviewer, we hope to book in further work in the near future!

Bristol-Lime Plastering Grade 2* listed chapel

James did us proud with matching lime plastering for our ancient chapel in Frenchay. Dedicated service and tidiness.

Lime Plastering Clevedon

“James visited to quote for two small w/c rooms in our Georgian town house. His knowledge of period properties and techniques that were sympathetic to an old building like ours were what led us to go ahead. He later applied a 3 coat system of lime plaster and putty to the external walls and gypsum plaster to the interior surfaces.

James was polite, professional and a pleasure to have around. James kept us updated on his movements between visits and was trusted with access even when we were out. We were happy with the quality of the work and will look to book in further works in the not so distant future.”

We would fully recommend his plastering services others.

Bristol-Brick wall build and rendering Bristol

“We had a tricky piece of work done requiring gaps to be filled in a small wall with some brickwork, adding drainage, rendering to neaten it up and shaping to finish nicely. James did a great job, is really friendly and had a great level of communication throughout to check we were happy with the work. We’re very happy with the work he’s done for us! “

“I contacted CJ Home Maintenance early this year regarding various work that needed to be done, having read some very good reviews. James has since insulated the loft and successfully carried out repairs to the garage roof which was leaking badly in several places. Both jobs were carried out promptly and to a high standard. We have agreed on other work that needs to be carried out in the near future. James is a multi skilled professional and I would not hesitate to recommend him”.

“James has done various jobs for me over the last year – chiseling out brickwork to then enable him to mortar in cast-iron air-bricks, boxing in various pipes and cables, and helping to resolve a front door that kept jamming. He has always been friendly, with works completed quickly and well, and with great communication throughout. Looking forward to seeing them for the next job I need done (fixing a floor joist) in (checks calendar) about 2 weeks”

“We recently moved to Bristol and James has done a number of pieces of work for us now as we get our new house sorted out. He has fitted a new doorbell and postbox, painted our front door, renovated our under stairs cupboard, fitted new exterior lights and a number of other things. In all cases James has done excellent quality work for the price agreed in advance, and we will definitely be using him again in future. James is also a polite, friendly and professional person, and a pleasure to have in the house. Recommended”.

“We hired James to rip out our hedge and put up a fence. He was very professional and the fence is set with concrete posts and very sturdy. We also hired him to come back and build our shed and again, very prompt and professional. I should note this wasn’t an easy job as of where we wanted the shed put up. But he looked at the situation and decided the best course of action to get the shed up and safely. Had no problems with any work James has done for us.”
